May 21-City Services Trip!

What a day!  Thank you so much to all the parent drivers and helpers that made the day possible.  We were hoping for a sunny day but we ended up in the drizzle for most of it.....but that didn't stop us! We began the day with look at Coquitlam's Spirit Square.  It is a nice place to go if you have never been. Check the local papers for information about Farmer's Markets and free concerts held there too!

While the students were working on their sheet about local services....I zipped into the RCMP detachment hoping to gather a few tattoos or stickers for the classes.  Not only did they give us both.....they delivered them out to us with an officer in full RCMP reds!  Quite a surprise and a treat.  We posed for a picture of course.

And then we were off to City Hall.  We had a short presentation (where we impressed the presenters with our knowledge of local government!) followed by about 40 minutes with Mayor Stewart!  He came and talked with all of us and then took the time to answer all of our prepared questions.  He was very patient and funny-handling all the questions well...even the ones about if we could lower property taxes!  After our official time we had the opportunity to sit in his chair for some photos.  Some of the students were really funny making "future mayor" poses.  Mayor Stewart then couldn't resist coming to join us for some more photos!  (I will send those along too.)

Then we were off to brave the elements again.  We walked along Pinetree Street to see many city services and then to have a quick tour of Town Centre Fire Hall.  Many thanks to Chase's dad for the visit. We snuck in, got a quick tour, and demonstration of all the gear they wear.  The students were really excited!

Next up....lunch!!  Since it was so wet we took cover in the community centre and ate the hot lunches from PAC.  We didn't stay for long as we had more to do!

We walked back to the Coquitlam Public Library.  What a neat building.  The children's librarians greeted us and gave us a storytime......complete with a funny song (hope the kids aren't all repeating that one!).  Some students got their very own library cards (much excitement for this too!) and we all had a chance to check out the selection of books.

When we got back to school we had tattoos, stickers and City of Coquitlam badges to hand out to everyone as souvenirs of our great adventure.

I will share the photos soon too!

May 8-10

Hello everyone!  We had a scorcher of a week and with the weather this good how much work did we get done?  Well, let me tell you, the kids worked pretty hard and it was nice to be able to have week with minimal interruptions.

Our track and field team is all but made up and now notices are being sent home to see who will be attending the district track meet on May 22nd.  We are very pleased to say that we have a group of 9 selected to attend the meet.  On the notice will be information on what event and whether your child is an alternate.  The alternate status means that if someone is injured or cannot attend that event, your child will compete in the place of the injured athlete.  We wish them all the best!  The rest of us will be cheering them on from school.

Some up dates to the blog.  I have found a way to link worksheets to the planner message on the blog site.  If your child is missing the worksheet you can click on the link and the work sheet will be available to print and/or download.  No need to wait till the next day to get the sheet, it is available on our blog.

Our student will be coming home with a special gift for mom.  When your child says "don't look in my bag!"  They really mean it.

Our math unit on multiplication and division is coming to a close and we will be moving on to Fractions.  I have some websites that will help your child with fractions.  Please check the math tab on our blog for some help or check the Teaching Links tap for some more resources.

We've finalized our artist study on Andy Warhol and we will be studying Georgia O'Keeffe.

Next week we will continue our Bat unit in Science.  The students will have an opportunity to do some research on the bat of their choice.  We will be presenting their research in the form of a powerpoint slide.

We wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day!!!  Have a great weekend!
